I broke 2,000 reads overnight. Yippee!! It’s taken me over 290 stories to reach this number, with about 95 subscribers. I have put a lot of work into each of these stories. Most of these reads came from the last thirty days. I have been a member of Vocal since July of 2021, but I have only written for less than six months total during this time.

Welcome back, readers. If you have been following this little three-parter I have created, you know about my first written story and how I strayed from the writer’s path during high school. Sure, both were written in the form of freelance, but the title of my first official story for eyes beyond my own goes to a piece I wrote for a writing contest.

The Wizard of Oz 3
It was a long time ago, back in my earliest days of high school. We had a project due for my drama class, and the basic idea is we had to act out a bunch of scenes from a chosen play. Many students took this premise and simply worked with a collection of scenes from any well-known work of art, Shakespeare, and the like. I, however, had a deep and passion and yearning to not merely replicate works that had been previously done, but to put my own ideas out there in the ether. I wanted more than anything to create something that was mine and share it with everyone.

My First Story was a Nightmare. Top Story - September 2023.
My first story came from a strange place and I hope I am not alone in this. It wasn't from a book, although, in part, one of the greatest science fiction novelists, had his hand in it. The idea didn't come from a movie or video game either. It all started in 18 years ago in the back seat of my mom's red Dodge Durango.

My First Story
The first story I ever written started back in college of the year 2018. I was bored one day in my dorm room and had absolutly nothing to do, so I began a random google search on the topic of pickpocketing. During my search, I discovered the many techniques thiefs use to steal wallets and the types of scams they use on the vunrable. The one scam that peaked my interest was called the 419 advadnced free fraud that originated in Nigeria. The concept of the scam is to pretend to be someone your not in order to gain trust from the victem and have them send you money over and over again. After watching videos and reading stories about it, an idea popped into my head about the scam. I started analyze the story and coming up character names while continuing my research. After gathering all the information I needed, I got my notebook and began to write.

I've Been Writing for Lit Mags for Nearly A Year: Here's What I've Learned
The online literary scene is a storm of chaos that would make Dionysus weep with glee. Carnage churns the landscape, equal parts ink-soaked soil and vicious jungles. The torn bodies of old works, rejected works, and lost publications litter the lands, and your hopes and dreams bid you to step right over them. Sink them further into the muck of "yester-submissions" as you forge on in armor that may be the new shining plates of optimism, or plates scorched from burnout, painted with scenes of battles and cut out passages from a tale ongoing.
