Explaining My Inspirations For My Women's Wrestling Fiction Stories on Vocal

A look at what inspires my women's wrestling fics on Vocal

A lot of you may have noticed that I've been writing some fiction stories centering on the world of women's wrestling. I've been writing these stories for the last year or so, as a way of taking my fandom of women's wrestling to yet another level. For those of you familiar with my Lifetime-esque fics, don't fret, they are still coming.

I've really enjoyed women's wrestling for a long time, more so ever since I watched the indy bouts for the last 15 years. I've said my reasons for writing my thriller stories: because I feel I can create better villainesses than Lifetime, at times. Regarding wrestling, I know I can create better villainesses than what I see on TV (especially WWE). I've written quite a few women's wrestling fics, mostly split into two parts, and I want to discuss my inspiration for most of my stories. It's a fitting time to do so, because it's not only WrestleMania season, but we're are in the midst of some WM anniversaries. Tuesday was the anniversary of the first WM, Wednesday was the 25th anniversary of WM X-Seven (which ended with Austin's heel turn), Thursday was the 20th anniversary of Rey Mysterio winning the World Title at WM22, and today's the anniversary of the first WM I ever watched: WM21.

So let's dig in to a good bit of my fics, with some spoilers:

Rise of Le Matriarche

The two-parter, Rise of "Le Matriarche", was my first women's wrestling fic, and I wrote it early last February. The story centered on Janine Brock, an up-and-coming champion in the Canadian wrestling scene, but she is pursued by a legendary villainess known as "Le Matriarche" (French for "The Matriarch"). Janine confides in her idol, Collette Shannon, regarding her ordeal, but she would learn the hard way to never trust her heroes at Part 1's end, with Part 2 dealing with the fallout.

I mostly based Collette on Trish Stratus, mainly Trish's 2023 heel run. I wanted Collette to have the same villainous motive that Trish had three years ago: reminding everyone of her accomplishments, her legendary status, and how she will forever be relevant. Regarding the Canadian setting, where do I start? Canada is a big wrestling country, and I'll be honest, I think Canada appreciates wrestling more than we Yanks do. And of course, I couldn't help but make the NHL references, because the easiest thing that a babyface can do for pops, and a heel can do for heat, is mention sports.

The Scarlet Queen

I really love The Scarlet Queen so much. It was my attempt at a Snow White-ish women's wrestling story, and I do plan on writing another one like this. The central protagonist is Roxie Hart, a young wrestling superstar with many fans, her biggest one being her younger stepsister, Gabi Prentiss. However, while Gabi was her biggest supporter, Gabi's mother, Lori Prentiss, was Roxie's biggest critic, and she felt that Roxie was "influencing" Gabi into wrestling, when she wanted Gabi to follow in her own footsteps. All the while, Roxie has a new foe in the form of the titular Scarlet Queen, but as Roxie discovers, the new foe was a familiar one: Lori.

Again, I wanted to feature a "wicked stepmother" type villainess in wrestling, because we almost never see it--with the exception of the angle between Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson in late 2002/early 2003. Regarding the inspiration for Lori Prentiss, I thought, "What if Taya Valkyrie played a Wicked Queen-like villainess?" That was the inspiration.

Love in the Time of Wrestling

It was Valentine's Day 2025, and I wanted to write something special for the holiday, so I wrote this piece, Love in the Time of Wrestling, which centers on Lena Pierce's encounters with a flirtatious masked wrestler known as Seductress. Lena has eyes for one woman, her wife, Natasha Grey-Pierce, but before they could celebrate Valentine's Day together, Lena would have to put an end to the Seductress saga.

Of course, I love LGBTQ+ representation, and I also love romantic surprises as well. I read this a lot because it was a beautiful and sweet tale of a couple who truly loves and supports each other in such amazing ways.

Obsession

Regarding Obsession, I wanted to create a Lifetime-esque women's wrestling fic, and while this one features a protagonist--Valerie Price--dealing with a masked villainess, I decided to unveil the villainess early in Part 1 because I wanted to focus on the aftermath. The masked woman, known as The Countess, was shockingly revealed as Valerie's boss, Penelope Warner, and her motives were romantic. She had romantic designs on Valerie, designs that were not reciprocated. How does Penelope respond? By firing Valerie's friends and by forcing her into a rematch, where Valerie would become Penelope's wife/henchwoman if Valerie loses.

I really loved creating Penelope Warner. I love these evil corporate bosses, and seeing a woman that role (either in wrestling or in a Lifetime film) is epic! I wanted to make Penelope unhinged, ruthless, and maniacal, but also a tad on the vulnerable side. I think I succeeded.

My most recent wrestling fic, which I wrote on St. Patrick's Day, just a few weeks ago. I was looking to enter Mike Singleton's challenge for March, and I cooked up this story centering on the titular Lyndsey Baker, an Irish-American up-and-coming second generation wrestler who finds herself "haunted" by a wrestling villainess known as the "Emerald Banshee." The "hauntings" led to a one-on-one encounter on St. Patrick's Day, which unveiled some deep family history.

I wanted to make Lyndsey second-generation from the get-go, because we see so many instances where wrestling is a family business. And of course, I wanted to really make this family centered by having the Banshee revealed as Lyndsey's aunt, Maureen O'Hanlon, and I loved creating Maureen because she's a modified version of the "fun/wacky aunt." In this case, Mona (Lyndsey's mother) being the babyface in and out of the ring and serving as a protector, while Maureen (albeit in a loving fashion) serves as a heel who provides a tough lesson to her niece.

* * *

These are just some of the women's wrestling fics I've written in the last year or so. Regarding the two-part stories I mentioned, while I have linked Part 1 of those stories, the Part 1s also have direct links to Part 2. With WrestleMania getting closer, the ideas are percolating. So regarding these stories I shared, what do you think? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
