Where Are the Ballads of the Ice Dancers

Those who brave to conquer madness

By Stanley DavisPublished 4 days ago 1 min read

They don’t make movies about meth addicts

Every time there’s an addict on the screen it’s them doing some opioid

I suppose it’s easier to empathize with the heroin user

Everyone’s tired, everyone longs to drift off

Be free from themselves for a while

But who would want to stay awake for days on end

Who would want to elude the one true escape we’re offered in this life

And instead,

Intentionally induce panic

Delirium

Paranoia

Punching holes in walls because they’re convinced their apartment is bugged

Quickly jerking their heads left and right at the flashes of shadowed silhouettes of people that flash into the eye’s periphery

Missing work because they finally finished masturbating four hours after their shift was supposed to start

There’s a “heroin chic” amongst certain youth

But notably, “meth chic” has not caught on as well

It’s the ennui which draws the masses to the heroin addict

It creates mystery,intrigue, a mythology

Silent people, in constant seek of rest

But a man rocking back and forth on the sidewalk tearing scabs from his face

There’s just no sensuality in that

The meth addict chooses to become a beast

They choose chaos over rest

They find reprieve in madness

It’s a hard mentality to put on camera

surreal poetry

Good point. I never saw the appeal. But I’m living with someone dealing with intermittent use and now withdrawal.
