World Water Day

The Day We Learned the Value of Every Drop

By Imran Ali ShahPublished 8 days ago 2 min read

It was a bright morning, and the city was alive with its usual noise. Cars rushed through the streets, people hurried to their jobs, and children got ready for school. Water flowed freely from every tap—clean, clear, and taken for granted.

But among all these people was a boy named Ayaan, who thought differently.

At just 12 years old, Ayaan had a small habit that made him stand out. He never let water run unnecessarily. While brushing his teeth, he turned off the tap. While washing his hands, he used only what he needed. Whenever he saw a leaking pipe, he would tell an adult.

His friends often laughed at him.

“Why are you so careful?” they asked. “There’s plenty of water!”

Ayaan would simply reply, “What if one day there isn’t?”

No one took his words seriously.

Until one morning, everything changed.

Ayaan woke up feeling thirsty. He walked to the kitchen, turned on the tap—and nothing came out.

He frowned and tried again. Still nothing.

“Mum, the water isn’t working!” he called.

His mother checked, thinking it was just a small problem. But soon, neighbors began knocking on doors. The entire building had no water. Within hours, the whole city faced the same issue.

Water had disappeared.

Panic spread quickly. People rushed outside carrying empty bottles, buckets, and containers. Shops sold out of bottled water within minutes. Long lines formed everywhere. Arguments broke out.

Ayaan stepped outside and saw something he had never seen before—fear.

A woman pleaded for just one glass of water for her child. An old man sat weakly on the roadside. A little girl cried, holding an empty cup.

“Why is this happening?” people asked.

But no one had an answer.

Days passed, and life became harder. Without water, people couldn’t cook, clean, or even stay healthy. Plants dried up, and the once-green parks turned brown. Schools and offices shut down. The city felt silent and tired.

Ayaan sat quietly in his room, holding his empty bottle. He thought about all the times water was wasted—taps left running, leaks ignored, buckets overfilled.

That night, something strange happened.

In his dream, he heard a soft voice.

“I am Water,” it said gently.

Ayaan looked around, confused. “Where are you?”

“I have always been here,” the voice replied. “I gave life to your world, but you forgot my value.”

Ayaan felt a deep sadness. “We didn’t mean to… we just didn’t realize.”

The voice continued, “If I return, will you protect me? Will you remind others?”

Ayaan nodded with determination. “Yes. I promise.”

The next morning, Ayaan rushed to the kitchen. With hope in his heart, he turned on the tap.

Drip.

Then another.

Water began to flow again.

He shouted with joy, “Mum! It’s back!”

But this time, things were different.

People had learned their lesson.

They used only what they needed. They fixed leaking pipes immediately. They taught their children to respect water. Buckets replaced long showers. Care replaced carelessness.

The city slowly came back to life—but with a new understanding.

Ayaan smiled, knowing that even small actions could make a big difference.

Because sometimes, we don’t realize the importance of something until it’s gone.

Do you turn off the tap while brushing your teeth?
