The Sly Donkey and the Burden of Cleverness: A Moral Tale
Once, on the outskirts of a quiet village, lived a donkey. He was a bit simple-minded but incredibly hardworking. He worked for a local merchant, carrying heavy loads of sugar on his back to be sold at the distant market.
One morning, the merchant loaded the donkey with several large, heavy sacks of sugar. The weight was so intense that the donkey struggled to even put one foot in front of the other. As they traveled, they came across a river.
Feeling thirsty, the donkey stepped down to the water’s edge for a drink. But as he leaned in, he lost his footing and fell right into the water with a loud splash!
Something curious happened next. As the sugar dissolved in the water, the sacks became incredibly light. When the donkey finally scrambled back up, he was amazed to find that the heavy burden on his back had almost vanished.
He was thrilled. "What a brilliant discovery!" he thought. "If I fall into the river, my load disappears. I’ve found a way to make my life easy!"
From then on, every time the merchant loaded him with sugar, the donkey would "accidentally" trip and fall into the river. Each time, the sugar melted away, and the donkey would walk the rest of the way feeling light as a feather, secretly proud of his own wit.
The merchant eventually realized what was happening, but he stayed quiet. He wanted to see just how far the donkey would take this little game.
A few days later, the merchant bought a large stock of cotton. He piled the cotton sacks onto the donkey's back. Now, cotton is naturally light, so the donkey wasn't really struggling at all this time.
However, the donkey saw the river ahead and got greedy. He thought, "If I fall in now, this load will become even lighter, and I won’t feel a thing on my back!"
When they reached the middle of the stream, he intentionally tripped and plopped down into the water.
But this time, things went terribly wrong. Instead of melting away, the cotton soaked up the water and became immensely heavy. The more the donkey tried to stand, the heavier the sacks became. It felt as though a mountain had been placed on his back. The poor donkey groaned in pain, barely able to move or breathe under the crushing weight. He realized, far too late, that his trick had backfired.
The Moral of the Story
The donkey didn't understand the difference between sugar and cotton one dissolves, while the other absorbs. Like the donkey, we often make mistakes driven by ego or a desire for shortcuts, acting without understanding the reality of a situation. Never take a risk in an area where you have no knowledge or experience. If you must take a gamble, do it where you actually understand the stakes. Sometimes, trying to be too clever leads to a mess that no amount of trickery can fix.
