A Tree Called Jacob
Third time. They say the third time’s the charm and she got too caught up in that promise to have any doubts. Yet here she was leaving the doctor’s office with swollen eyes for the third time. He tried to console her as they drove home but she insisted on silence. It made her feel selfish but she was owed a little selfishness. The AC blasted on one side of her face as the other side pressed into the window. He tapped on the wheel as if the rhythm would summon her to speak again. When they arrived home she found it colder than she did before. She slept with her head on his lap as he watched a show, what went on in her mind was louder than whatever was on the television. The next morning there were coffee and eggs waiting for her. People came throughout the day with treats and solaces for the two of them. It all felt hollow to her no matter the gesture, the greatest gift she could be offered is the permission to lie in bed all day.

When Behavior Walks Away:
I have spent decades watching how behavior changes when the environment stops making sense. That skill came from forensics, trauma science, and animal work in the field. Patterns never break cleanly. They stretch first. They warp. Then the organism abandons the behavior that once kept it stable. I see that pattern now across animals that have nothing in common except the world they live in.

It feels as if an invisible hand has pressed a "START" button deep inside you, without ever asking for your permission.

Water Ceremony At The Mississippi River
We were especially pleased with the sun up in the sky today! And I talked about how much energy the sun gives me in the winter. I have never been diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), but I believe I have it. My energy is like night and day when the sun hasn't been out for a few days.

From Loss to Harvest
Today we took down our pigeon pea tree. After the recent freeze, it simply couldn’t hold on. The cold wrapped itself around its branches, and what once stood tall and green slowly surrendered to brittle stems and fading leaves. It’s strange how quickly a shift in weather can change the fate of something that felt so steady. But three weeks before the freeze, I gathered its final harvest. And for that, I am grateful.
