Memoir
The Author Goes On a Movie Date...
They had done it; he had asked her out and she had said YES! They had visited a few times about movies or the local theater. He had asked her out to the movies or to dinner so many times before. THIS TIME, her schedule had had an unusual opening; and she had said YES. He had been to the movies, alone, with a woman before, of course. But THIS time, he would be at the cinema with HER.

I Was Somebody’s Dusty Son. Content Warning.
At the heart of my adolescent turmoil, during those precarious years of middle school, there exists a chapter of my life that has remained— inscribed with indelible ink. To be honest every year leading up to, and since has had its own stand out moments. This is just a chapter I’ve often hesitated to revisit— not solely because of its intrinsic pain but because of the irrevocable mark it left on my self-perception.

He told me his name, but it got lost in the reggaeton, and I didn’t hear it again until a couple of hours later when we exchanged phone numbers. Since then, I’ve only ever said it out loud seven times.

Double Jeopardy in Tokyo
On a sweltering hot afternoon in the summer of 2002, in an air conditioned conference room high in a Tokyo office tower, I sat opposite a team of Japanese SEC officials. They were steadily raising their voices, now almost shouting, accusing me of insider trading. The man in the middle, a mid-aged man with thick swept back hair, named Okada-san, peppered me with questions and accusations, while his two colleagues sat expressionless, studying my every movement. They wore the dark blue suits, white shirts, and pressed ties that were the standard uniform of Japanese government bureaucrats. I was an outsider.
