What wouldn’t a mother do? If she was truly committed to saving the life of her sick baby, apparently, next to nothing. In this Season One episode of the always excellent "Friday the Thirteenth: The Series," a woman named Leslie Kent (Lynn Cormack, in a role with a sort of suburban evil queen aspect to it) with a coffin-like cradle and her weak, easily dominated husband seek to preserve the life of a sick infant (read: changeling child) by hunting down and murdering folks. Near a body of water.

Star Trek TOS: The Galileo Seven
"The Galileo Seven" is classic Star Trek, a nail-biter featuring a crash-landing by the away team on a hostile alien world—a nightmarish place where huge, shambling bear-creatures, seen only from behind, attack the stranded shuttle crew under the command of Spock. The heart of the episode lies in the interplay between Spock's will to command, his unshakable devotion to logic (here revealed not as innate, but as something he must consciously practice and struggle to maintain), and his need to “humanize” his leadership. Boma, the only Black man aboard the shuttle, takes exception to Spock’s seemingly callous, machine-like demeanor (he even uses that word as an insult). Inside, though, Spock shows insecurity: a constant battle between fear and logic, duty and compassion.

The Son of the Stars
Womb-like, a silvery ship plummets through the heavens, a young boy aboard losing his parents when they answer to an outer space distress signal. He becomes orphaned, growing up amidst artificial and puzzling lifeforms on an alien world, amid a landscape of strange vegetation and uncanny encounters. His mind becomes telepathic as he exhibits strange powers, but always, his mind returns to the one image that, like a ghost, haunts him: that of the lost pilot, Andra O'Neill.

I recently completed DC Universe Secret Origins [1], and, let me tell you, it’s a hell of a book. Thick, hardcover, and brimming with pulp comic book Golden Age goodness. We learn the secrets behind the Superman–Batman team-up, the mythological origins of Wonder Woman (she was blessed by a multiplicity of gods, including Aphrodite, Merc, and Herc—Mercules and Hercury, har-har), and what it was like to be Superbaby, then Superboy, and finally El Supero Uno, Mucho Macho Nacho, The Man of Steel. Booya.

Hell Night
Hell Night is a bodacious 1981 horror-a-thon starring the tantalizin’ ta-tas of Linda “Your Mother Sucks Cocks in Hell” Blair. (Hey, we mean chickens, okay? CHICKENS!) Linda was last seen writhing around in a bed of pukey pea soup in The Exorcist, all the while flicking the bean with a crucifix (my, our mind is dirty this morning), and can’t be bothered to explain how she went from that undeniable classic to this, well, less-than-classic.

DC Secret Origins gives us the origin of The Spectre, a minor player in the DC Universe who demonstrates the oft-recurring trope of a hero being born—or rather reborn—from his own death. Apparently, crossing the Veil and coming back can so significantly alter an individual, particularly a common man (even though a “hardboiled private dick”), that he (alternately “she,” no chauvinists we) will don a costume and begin to fight jewel thieves and other crook-noses on behalf of Universal Consciousness.
