Somers Resident Joins Mission to the Border
Kaethe Bierbach grew up in Chappaqua, spent 30 years as an administrator at the Thomas Watson Research in Yorktown and moved to Somers in 2019. She also joined the Presbyterian Church of Mt Kisco in 1979 and has long been part of the social justice aspect of the congregation’s mission. As such, she’s lent her time on behalf of organizations like Neighbor’s Link, the Interfaith Food Pantry and the Interfaith Prison Partnership. But rising temperatures has gotten the Heritage Hills resident to focus her latest energies beyond the local, and the climate of concern has nothing to do with mercury levels.

Tarrytown Man Takes Team Israel to the Olympics
If you asked most Americans whether Israel and baseball go together in any context, the answer would probably be no. The assumption would be very far off, though. “Israeli baseball started with a bunch of Kibbutzniks 30 or 40 years ago - transplanted Jews from the states,” said Eric Holtz of Valhalla. But the game is now played everywhere, and Israel must have a quaint little program that falls far short of the likes of the USA, Japan and the Dominican Republic. Not so fast again and Holtz can attest to the team’s chops between the lines - even when taking into account the bias he may carry as the Team Israel Coach.

An Opportunity Lost in the Manner White Privilege Lesson was Pulled from Somers High School
I don't live under a rock. So I definitely caught wind of the white privilege lesson that was being taught at the high school in Somers, and despite having no kids of my own, I still reserve the right to weigh in on. After all, the controversy affects me too. Even so, the people have spoken up, the school board listened to the issue at hand and a change has been made. But in victory, the students in question have lost an important opportunity.

The Nicolas De La Pava Flag Football Tournament at Fox Lane Beats the Heat with Love and Friendship
On Saturday Aug 4, five teams gathered at Fox Lane High School for the Third Annual Nicolas De La Pava Flag Football Tournament. Raising scholarship funding in the memory of the former football standout, the sweltering heat of the day could have easily zapped the strength of the fans and players in attendance. But the elements didn’t stand a chance against the driving force of this family and friendship fueled event, according to Nick’s Mother Myriam De La Pava.

Graduates Should Be Encouraged to Do Not Dream
Photo by Keith Parker On Facebook, parents are encouraging their kids to follow their dreams. Come on, you are a parent and should have good advice. So I just want to gag. Rote clichés with no basis means I must comment.

Kings Who Kill Their Own
Photo by Geoff Henson Peter the Great Peter the Great wasn't much for sitting still. A lesson learned when the Streltsy Guard turned the Kremlin walls red long before their time. Numerous blood relatives providing the splatter, the 1682 palace coup kept Russia’s restless emperor always on the run from Moscow's intrigue. So much so that instead of draining the swamp, he filled his own and built St. Petersburg on desolate marshland. He erected a navy from nothing, too, and Russia ceased to be sedate as long as his expansive ways reigned. His son Alexie, on the other hand, was more of a homebody.

Dave Chappelle isn’t an Enemy of the Trans Community, He’s an Advocate
Photo by John Bauld Dave Chappelle has gotten a ton of attention with The Closer. His latest Netflix special, the transgender, LBGT and MeToo communities are not happy. Understandable, there’s an onslaught of raucous and down right hurtful jokes aimed at those groups. But people are only offended because they just don’t understand what a real comic does. So as to not leave them hanging, I’m going to explain standup as a civic duty.

Jodi Long Rides her Rich Cultural Past in One Woman Show – Surfing DNA
Photo by *highlimitzz Before Jodi Long landed the role of OK Cha on the TBS comedy, Sullivan and Son, she had a pretty good resume. She debuted on Broadway at the age of seven and had numerous TV appearances on shows like Roseanne, the Cosby Show, House and Law & Order. On film, Robocop 3, the Hot Chick and Striking Distance round out her IMDB page. But as the series grind has hit hiatus, she is reviving, Surfing DNA. A one woman show that explores her Chinese/Japanese/Scottish background, and the manner in which it unknowingly affected her life. Still, why not just take a break.

John Jay Community Refuses to Abandon Coach Bill Swertfager
On Thursday, November 3, the Board of Education met for its weekly meeting, and the room bursting with parents, alumni and current students, the gathering was no ordinary affair. The board recently alerted Coach Bill Swertfager that he would not be among the coaches slated for return. The issue at hand stemmed from an incident that took place 18 months ago at a John Jay Girls Softball game. In response, the public comment echoed a profound disagreement with the decision.

John Jay Falls in Five Set Thriller to Somers
The last week of the regular season upon us, John Jay and Somers put their crosstown rivalry in place. Tuesday, October 19, the Wolves had the affair looking pretty one-sided and stood a point away from sweeping. Unfortunately, it was the Tuskers who took out the broom.
