Foxy Mama’s Come to Life in Victory over the Bees Knees of Somers
On Thursday July 27, the Westchester Female Flag Football League got together for another night of gridiron games, and the Foxy Mama’s were there again to represent for Katonah/Lewisboro. Proud in Purple, the contingent of Cross River area Moms faced the Bees Knees of Somers. But Whitney Hartmann was not charmed by her opponents for very long and set the tone on the second play from scrimmage.

Andrew Hammer is Still Pitching with Heart
Photo by Mitchell Hammer After completing his time at John Jay last year, Andrew Hammer got a scholarship from Curry College, and while nervous when the day arrived, it was excitement that ruled the day. “It’s basically what I wanted all of high school and what I trained for,” he said. “It’s right there and I’m officially starting,” he remembered. So thrown in like the rest of the freshman, the pitcher stood tall despite the fact that the early going began decidedly on the down side.

Mahopac’s TNT Explodes for First Victory in Women’s Flag Football League
The TNT Women’s Flag Football team started their season at 0-2, and the Gridiron Goddesses stood in the way of the Mahopac based team's first win on Thursday, July 13. At Somers High School, TNT lit the fuse and didn’t wait long to explode.

John Jay Falls 31-21 to Rye in Section Semifinals
Even though last week’s upset win over Clarkstown South landed John Jay in the semifinals, there was no sense that these Wolves were playing with house money against third seeded Rye. A 21-17 fourth quarter lead said as much. Unfortunately, three straight plays allowed Rye to cash in their chips, and a 31-21 victory followed. But the sudden turn of events in no way defined his team, according to Coach Joe Candarelli, and while there were plenty of tears, dry eyes will eventually leave much for these young men to fall back on.

John Jay Scores Big Upset over Top Seeded Clarkstown South
When John Jay lost to Mahopac two weeks ago, the Wolves lost control of their destiny. They needed a Pelham victory over Eastchester and a favorable calculation in the tiebreaker formula. Both scenarios working out, John Jay drew the top seed at Clarkstown South on Friday night and obviously the math was not on their side this time. Seeded sixth, the consensus around the section concurred. “Everyone thought we were losing,” said quarterback Craig Galea. But that’s why they play the games.

John Jay Loses Monumental Struggle to Mahopac
After pulling out a close one last week versus Eastchester, John Jay held third place, and victory at Mahopac meant playoffs. The Indians weren’t so obliging, though, and a monumental struggle had a full stadium on edge until the last play. Coach Joe Candarelli, on the other hand, didn’t need the whistle to signal the way he felt about the heart his boys showed on Friday night. “I’ve never been so proud of this team, he said. But the berth the Wolves were hoping to come home with was not to be.

Senior Night Victory over Eastchester Has John Jay a Win Away from Playoff Berth
After losing 14-7 last week to Pelham, John Jay stood 1-2 in the league and had no room for error. However, their Senior Night appointment with Eastchester still had the Wolves in the driver’s seat. So the boys took the wheel and didn’t let their community down.

John Jay Evens Record with 56-39 Victory Over Sleepy Hollow
On Saturday, September 24, John Jay celebrated Homecoming and only one quarter in, Sleepy Hollow looked like they were getting a very quick send off. The Wolves took a 21-0 lead, and the bleachers were rocking. But the Horsemen wouldn’t go away, and Cesar Rosario’s 40 yard field goal to close the half at 28-17 gave quarterback Craig Galea pause. “I was worried,” the senior admitted.

An 0-2 start to a football season means week three can salvage a season or send it off the rails. So after quickly sending the Clarkstown North to the bench on possession one, John Jay gave the ball back on their first play, and doubt took a front row seat. But the miscue was just a blip.

John Jay Loses 34-27 in Overtime Heartbreaker
On Friday, September 3 at Contest Field, John Jay hosted Yorktown and both fan bases endured a heart stopping roller coaster ride. Still, the Wolves never wavered, according to Head Coach Joe Candarelli. “Their heart, desire and effort is never in question,” he boasted. But in the end, the flatline landed on the side of the home team and laid waste to John Jay’s faithful.
