Somers Faculty/Student Basketball Game Brings Fun and Competition
On Friday May 17, in the thick of the postseason, Somers stepped back and took a little down time courtesy of the Peer Leadership Program. “I’ve always felt this would be a fun idea, having a staff/student basketball game,” said Noah Volkman, the organizer of the event. And no doubt, the Somers senior was on the mark. But competition was definitely part of the lesson plan, and both sides did their share of schooling in the hard fought affair.

John Jay Moves to Semis with Win Over Pelham
On Friday May 17, third seeded John Jay began the sectionals with a quarterfinal matchup versus Pelham, and not going unnoticed, Jojo Degl returned from injury. Out four straight games, she eased into her reemergence.. “I was getting used to it,” said the middie. But Pelham taking a 4-3 at the end of the first had Degl fully acclimated.

Roosevelt making the trip north, the visitors put runners on the corners before barely getting off the bus. So Maria DeGataeno just stayed centered in the circle. “I had confidence that we could get out of it,” said the freshman. But I was all it actually took, and from there, the Wolves were well on their way.

Video The Somers Flag Football season began with injuries and a string of losses. So the team figured an attitude adjustment couldn’t hurt. Dinners and off field get togethers, said Julia Schmidberger, “It built our chemistry as a team.” And the results revealed with a berth in the sectionals on May 9 at home versus Panas. But the Tuskers did more than show up.

Somers Stays Together in 3-2 Victory over Brewster
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons below After losing a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Somers got a runner on second with two outs in top of the seventh. Unfortunately, Ellie Walsh’s routine grounder to the right side looked like the Tuskers would have to face the Brewster hammer in the bottom. But while the Bears may have taken the out for granted, the batter didn’t.
