Digging Up Chapters and Short Stories
One of my favorite poets of all time is the winner of the Noel Prize in Literature (1995) Irish Literary Legend, Seamus Heaney. Whereas another great legend Ted Hughes wrote the poem 'The Thought Fox' to describe how he goes about writing a poem, Heaney wrote the poem 'Digging' to describe his choice to be a poet, instead of following his father's footsteps, digging for peat in an Irish bog.

March 15, 2026
Merriam Webster - Word of the day: Tranche refers to a division or portion of a whole. World Contact Day is commemorated every year on March 15. It is a unique observance held globally to focus on communicating with extraterrestrial life and exploring the possibility that intelligent beings may exist beyond Earth. World Contact Day inspires people to invoke their curiosity and spend time thinking about the universe and the mysteries surrounding it. What is the “Ides of March”? According to the Roman calendar, the Ides are a monthly occurrence. In March and other months with 31 days, the Ides always falls on the 15th; it falls on the 13th in months with 30 days. The Ides traditionally marked the arrival of the new Moon and was cause for celebration. The word “Ides” is derived from Latin, meaning “to divide.” Mothering Sunday in 2026 falls on Sunday, March 15. Mothering Sunday, celebrated in the United Kingdom and Ireland, occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is exactly three weeks before Easter. Unlike the fixed-date Mother's Day in countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia, Mothering Sunday’s date changes each year according to the Christian liturgical calendar. On March 15, 2026, several notable observances and events are celebrated: Dumbstruck Day: A day to express frustration. Everything You Think is Wrong Day: A day to challenge and celebrate wrong beliefs. International Day Against Police Brutality: A day to raise awareness and advocate against police violence. My look at today, March 15, 2026 below:

100 Top Stories and Other Accidents
On March 9th, an entry I published for the "Everyone Is Acting Normally" Challenge, Silken Chains, was awarded a Top Story. I was delighted. For various reasons. It is one of my best-written stories, and it helped me achieve another Vocal milestone.

The Solitude of The Chupacabra
Many say that the Chupacabra is a rather recent and modern tale, a mangy coyote or rabied dog. Some point out that it’s just twisted evolution. But very few know the true backstory of the shapeshifter that led to the bloodsucking legend. And perhaps once you will come to know and understand more, you might “forget” a few cattle out to wander.

Hey Ralph - I hear you. Vocal is a challenge in persistence and equanimity. One has to approach it with a Zen-like posture or we'll start to break things through frustration. I queried Vocal about subscriptions thinking that these people are being informed when I posted something new. Not the case. There is no distribution - it's all self-promotion. So, you're right, top stories are picked by humans and there is a bias. Anyway, best to do what you do, enjoy the stories and poems and see what happens. Cheers my friend.
Nicely written, covering what a lot of us feel. We, too, get very few reads, but mostly due to exposure being limited. I'm sure Vocal Folkals all have reasons for what is done with regard to Top Stories, fostering diverse topics and timely issues, etc... but I do think they are trying to even the playing field.💙Anneliese
This is really interesting to read - I had never heard of medium before stumbling across vocal, and still haven't checked it out, but I fluctuate between enjoying vocal and accepting its flaws and finding its opacity and game play frustrating and feeling put off. I suspect you give voice here to the feelings of many.
Hi Ralph/Liam. I tried to rise your voice and hope that you'll be heard by many people.
