The Lapse

When the World's Locked Out

You hear my words and respond

But it's only a reflection

Like the still surface of a pond

Belying turmoil below.

What was said will be lost

To the stream of sensory input

On which your focus lies

The distractions that matter.

The games on the phone in your hand

The series playing on the television

For the fourth time

The comfortable things.

We'll go over it again later,

After you nod off a while

And the real world breaks through,

For a time.

We'll get through an hour.

The morning.

The day.

I'll remind you.

We'll do what needs done,

Together.

It will come back.

You'll escape again

Into that reality of your own.

It comes back,

And so will I.

I appreciate the way the stanzas grow shorter, as if trying to be brief enough to register to a fractured focus.
