Lovecraft Country is one of the greatest shows of all time.
The title needed to be restated.

It had one season.

In 10 episodes they developed characters,
and enveloped viewers,
more precisely than shows with 8 seasons.
This show gave history, fantasy, adventure, romance, horror, mystery, drama, science fiction, comedy, war, musical...
Correction - this show gives.
I will not use past tense.
It is a ongoing creation.
The show gives the totality of life.

And something that expansive
that massive,
that meaningful
was stripped from the people.
The people who were waiting on it.
The ones who didn't know they needed it.
And those who were afraid of it.

Lovecraft Country intertwined the
Tulsa Massacre, the
savage murder of Emmett Till, the
experimentation on Black bodies by physicians, the
pillaging of Indigenous lands/customs/people, the
Korean War, the
Green Book,
-
with
-
first love,
internalized homophobia,
emotionally and physically abusive familial dynamics,
self awakening discoveries,
death
-
Using magic to deliver victories
that the people who lived through it didn't have

If you haven't watched the show
and you've read this far
I still haven't spoiled it for you.
My skeletal review won't hinder the experience of seeing it for the first time.
It can't.
Something that finely crafted is beyond dismantlement.
I have watched the show three times and typing this I am tempted to start it again.

Misha Green did something that has never been done.

And HBO was afraid.
It wasn't a "toxic set environment" because HBO has no qualms about that when it comes to other shows.

They saw
a white woman being murdered the same way Emmett Till was
and white people losing the magic they stole
and a Black woman naming herself
and it was 2020
and the world was on fire
and Lovecraft Country empowered and showed a little too much.

LOVECRAFT COUNTRY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWS OF ALL TIME.
