In Blood and Pain

Easter Weekend Reflections

By Gabriel HuizengaPublished about 3 hours ago 1 min read

The devil places charges,

the darkness hurls spears;

he hates and hurts with wound and vice -

tearing flesh, finding fears.

But all the pain and blood he lets

in seeking to destroy -

they make but channels, deeper for grace

to foil the curse'd ploy.

For Love first beat the world of dark

being pierced in hands and flanks,

and loosing love in blood and pain:

glory's river, breaking dry life's banks.

When is hope the most like hope?

When given reason to despair.

When is love the most like love?

When reasons to love are rare.

The inversion awaits, reversal comes -

All of the ache, the rot, e'er rife,

In this world so old and weary now

Shall turn soon to new-made life.

I certainly hope that new life will come, Gabriel. This was powerful, and the language, elegant.
