Though I Am Not Owned

When I wear shorts,

My legs are not yours to observe,

I am not a doll;

I aim to please myself, not you,

When I wear a bikini,

Or,

Even a costume,

It's for the pleasure of feeling the sun

on my skin,

And,

The water at my feet,

I don't wear it for you to oggle me like I am food,

When I choose a dress,

Whether low neckline or,

Above the knee;

I wear it to please me,

Not to feed your eyes,

And finally;

Don't tell me who my friends should be,

Or roast that man for talking to me,

I love you,

Though I am not owned;

I never will be.

    I remember the day I came home after a few hours of shopping with friends. The first thing my (then) husband said was, after noticing my newly pierced ears, "If God meant for you to have holes in your ears, he'd have put them there." I replied with, "Well, God didn't put the hole in your head but you sure act like you have one." That ended the discussion. No wonder we got divorced.
