A Day Not Unlike Today

Words for someone who'll never read them

By Mack D. AmesPublished about 2 hours ago 1 min read
As she was before I knew her.

It was on a Tuesday, not unlike today,

That I bid my last farewell to you, dear Mum.

The weather was chilly, but the sun was bright,

When your heart, body, and soul said goodbye.

You labored for months to fight the disease,

Knowing your fight was in vain.

Yet you hid that from me, Mum, because you believed

it was too much for me to comprehend.

I've tried for years to understand why you made that choice,

but I've never been able to grasp it.

I guess it's the way you were raised, and you decided to hide it,

and Dad went along with your wishes.

Still, I wish I had known that you would never recover,

because of the hurt that caused me--

to think God wasn't good and didn't answer prayers

when he took you on St. Patrick's Day 1987.

Today is Tuesday, St Patty's Day, too,

39 years since you left us.

I miss you like crazy, but know you're with Jesus.

Lord willing, I'll be there someday, too.

Now in my 50s, Mum, I realize God healed you,

just perfectly, and not for this earth.
