Surviving the Unpredictable: Soumitra Dutta on AI and the Future of Learning

Human Intelligence in an AI World

By David WilliamPublished 8 days ago 3 min read

Professor Soumitra Dutta believes that the rate of growth of AI is exponential, and it is necessary to reinvent education. He suggests that in place of the inert degrees, the models of lifelong learning are to be adopted to make sure that technology does not substitute human fulfillment.

The world is already gnashed by some form of AI fear; every news article alternates between the ecstatic and the end of the world. former Dean of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, Soumitra Dutta talks do not merely glance at the horizon; Dutta’s doctorate was in Artificial Intelligence. He has years of research, teaching and consulting experience on AI strategy, so he has the information about the mechanisms of the wave that are now hitting the shore of the global industry.

Soumitra Dutta is making it very clear that the future is uncertain, but are we?

This is a change that is of exponential nature that the world is experiencing today. Professor Dutta is of the opinion that this model is not only tearing apart but making itself outdated. Simply be prepared to forget anything that you have ever imagined. This isn't just hyperbole. The traditional white-collar barriers are fading away where now AI can reason, create works of art, and form emotional connections (examples of such systems are Xiaoice or film equivalents of this sort of AI in Her). Software engineers, lawyers, even lecturers are having the moats crossed by algorithms.

Soumitra Dutta hypothesizes that it could be the total product re-invention of the university. Individual degree program is no longer a toolkit as the nature of work is changing on the per-couple of year basis due to technological advancement. Dutta has a 30-years product as opposed to a 3-years product. This is where the process to Lifelong Learning goes. A university like Oxford is no longer considered a destination where you visit at twenty five years old, it is now an experience that goes with you throughout your life with courses being provided to you through Xbox known as Oxford Online and AI-assisted mentorship, which evolves with you to a thousand rather than a hundred.

Soumitra Dutta does not hesitate to acknowledge the fact that the prospect of AI is quite terrifying. He also knows that we are going to remove jobs by destroying jobs. He is aware that, as human beings, we are not exceptionally good when it comes to imagining what growth would appear like that. However, he claims that fear is not an effective strategy.

He is adamant that we should not be scared because this is not going to achieve results that are better. It means in the case of business schools that they ought to be their own research laboratories, risky, and tolerant to failures and how AI absolutely can serve human dignity instead of undermining it.

The footprint of elite universities will remain to be expanded as we proceed to the next five years. With technology, the knowledge and popularity of institutions like Oxford can travel to other places in the world that would have been inaccessible. Professor Soumitra Dutta puts the last dilemma on us, but it is not just a dilemma of technology; whether we are making the world a better place or not. Re-conception of any organization is imperative, to ensure that the less traditional labor is required, the higher the human fulfillment will have an opportunity to be offered.

The UK has long and mercantilist and scholarly traditions and is in an ideal position to spearhead this move, if it is able to build some momentum. Dutta desperately pleads with us not to be the final one to transform. The future is what the AI will paint on the blank canvas, and we do not know which one, but the future is there, and we are the ones to be holding the brush.
