Themes in Hallmark Movies
Small Town
The leading man or woman leaves a big city and goes to a small town that has an unusual name. They go there to find a solution to a problem. They intend to return to their high-paying job in the big city after the assignment is over. However, after a few days, they fall in love with the small town and the people in it. After establishing a relationship with a special person, it is hard for the character to go back to the big city. If the person does leave, he or she isn't happy there. The person returns to the small town because love wins over a good job.
A Failing Business
In the small town, there is usually a failing business or a personal family crisis . Sometimes the family business is connected to the main character in some way. It sometimes involves a mom-and-pop operation that a big company is trying to take over. Sometimes the family business is behind in debt and is on the verge of losing it.
Jobs in the Small Town
There are very few jobs in Hallmark movies. In the first few minutes of the movie, one of the leading characters might have a lucrative job. Then the character is sent to a small town where he or she takes a low-paying job while on assignment. There are a lot of main characters who are chefs, waitresses, florists, bookstore owners, reporters, and real estate agents.
A Deceased Spouse
Hallmark doesn't show the death of a spouse, but most of the time, there is a single parent with small children. The surviving spouse could be male or female. The main character often bonds with the children before realizing he or she is in love with the parent. Not only is a spouse deceased, but also one or both of the main characters have a deceased mother or father.
Discovering Someone to Love
Often, the main character returns from a big city to his small hometown and reconnects with a longtime friend. In some movies, the main character accidentally meets someone on the way to the destination. A woman could be sitting by someone on an airplane. They get stranded in an airport during a storm. They share secrets and accommodations. Even though they have significant others, they bond, and by the end of the movie, they have become a couple.
A Miracle That Changes Things
There is almost always a supernatural element that changes everything. That change gives Hallmark movies happy endings. Interestingly, the miracle comes about during the last few minutes of the episode. A business is saved in the nick of time. There is a kiss between two people who didn't like each other during most of the movie.
Community
People in the community take an interest in matchmaking. They indicate their approval of the relationship by clapping when the lovebirds respond at the end of the movie.
Predictable Ending
Yes, Hallmark movies are predictable. Even so, viewers return to watch those movies even though they could write the endings themselves. In fact, sometimes people watch the same movie a second or third time. Why? Viewers like the way the family-friendly and inspirational movies make them feel when they are watching them. Viewers connect to the characters and enjoy seeing beautiful people get their happily-ever-after.
Actors in Hallmark Movies
Producers usually cast one or two main stars. The other characters are unknown actors. The extras in the movies make the scenes appear real. The people don't speak, but they are present in restaurants, on the streets, in airports, and in places where people would usually be.
The main characters are thirty-something and good-looking. You might see older people in Hallmark movies, but they are usually in supporting roles.
It is not by accident that you see some of the same actors in Hallmark movies. The network often uses the same actors in several movies instead of seeking new ones. Some of the most familiar Hallmark actors and actresses have starred in up to 28 or more movies.
Actors' Salary
Even though all the actors are talented and well-liked, they do not all get the same amount of pay for the excellent job they do.
