The Gardener and the White Crane: A Tale of Regret

In a small village, there lived an elderly gardener. He had spent nearly his entire life planting trees and nurturing them. His garden was widely considered the most beautiful spot in the village, and to him, every single plant felt like one of his own children.

A white crane had made its home in that garden. Every morning, it would hop through the foliage, eating insects and keeping the plants healthy and pest-free. The gardener grew very fond of the bird and would leave food out for it every day. Whenever the crane saw him, it would flap its wings and circle around him in greeting. There was a profound sense of trust between the two.

One morning, while working in the garden, the old man noticed a hole dug near the roots of his favorite mango tree. He worried that a mongoose or some large pest was behind it. Fearful that the tree might wither and die, he became deeply anxious.

Just then, the crane landed near the hole, wings flapping. As the gardener watched, the bird started pecking at the soil, making the hole even larger. This sight made him furious. He immediately assumed the crane was destroying his tree. In a fit of rage, he grabbed a stick and lunged at the bird.

Startled, the crane flew up to a nearby branch. But after a moment, it landed again and went right back to the same spot. This time, the gardener lost all patience. He swung the stick and struck the bird’s wing. With a pained cry, the crane tried to fly away but collapsed onto the ground, badly injured.

Seeing his longtime companion lying there, the gardener stood frozen in shock. He suddenly realized how far his anger had pushed him. The bird lay still and lifeless, its white feathers stained with blood.

When he finally looked into the hole, he went pale. Tucked inside was a venomous snake that could have easily killed the tree or even bitten him. The crane hadn’t been destroying the tree; it had been trying to drive the snake out. The gardener quickly killed the snake with his stick, but by then, it was too late. The crane was gone.

For a long time, the gardener sat there with the crane’s body in his hands. His heart was heavy with a guilt that would never truly leave him.

Moral: This story teaches us that acting out of anger and misunderstanding can lead to a lifetime of regret. Never turn on those you love before you truly understand the meaning behind their actions.
