Where am I? What’s happening?!
A boy wakes up in the middle of the sea, lying on a bed. He can’t see land anywhere.
After enough panic, he decides that the most logical explanation is: he’s dreaming. So he goes back to sleep.
He has a pretty bad dream. He dreams of water again… and sharks coming toward him.
He wakes up from the dream, obviously still in the middle of the water.
“What the hell?!”
Panic hits him again. He tries to pinch himself, slaps himself, but still doesn’t wake up. He even bites himself to check.
“I didn’t know humans eat themselves.”
He hears a woman’s voice so beautiful it almost doesn’t feel real. He turns his head and sees two stunning girls at the edge of his bed.
Both of them look at him, confused.
“Maybe this human is a bit strange.” She pauses to think, then notices he’s looking at them. “Oh look, he’s staring at us too. Maybe he understands what we’re saying?”
The other mermaid turns, surprised. “Do you understand English?”
The man, fascinated by their beauty, nods.

taking the train to the sea
Stranger Danger The clanking steel wheels crash against the hot, expanding metal of the rail track as puffs of steam engulf the station. The clouds in the sky swirl like blobs of paint mixed in water; the faint sprinkles erupt as if struck by a paintbrush. These scattered showers dance across the sky as they splatter against basalt roof tiles and voluminous oaks. People dressed in heavy jackets depart from the train car, stepping past me, past the concrete squares that litter the ground. Like salmon, they push on unimpeded, past everyone around them on their way to work.
