Bahlool and the Lesson at the Bathhouse

Bahlool was a man who many people called "the wise fool." He lived simply, often wearing dusty clothes and wandering the streets, but those who truly knew him understood that every action he took had a deep meaning. He had a way of teaching people lessons without ever raising his voice.

One afternoon, Bahlool decided to visit the local public bathhouse, or the hammam. In those days, the bathhouse was a place where people didn't just wash up; they were treated to massages, steam rooms, and careful service by the workers. However, the servants at this particular bathhouse were a bit shallow. They judged people based on their appearance. When they saw Bahlool walk in with his worn-out clothes and simple shoes, they assumed he was a poor man who wouldn't be able to pay much.

As a result, they treated him with total indifference. No one rushed to help him with his things. When he entered the bathing area, the water was barely lukewarm. The servants, who usually gave customers a relaxing massage with sponges and oils, completely ignored him. They stood in the corner whispering and laughing, waiting for a "wealthier" customer to walk through the door. Bahlool didn't say a word. He finished his bath quietly, dried himself off with a rough towel, and got dressed.

As he was leaving, he walked up to the owner’s desk. To everyone's absolute shock, Bahlool pulled out ten gold dinars a huge sum of money for a simple bath and handed them over as a tip. The servants' eyes nearly popped out of their heads. Ten dinars! That was more than they earned in a week. They felt a sudden wave of regret and embarrassment. They realized they had just treated a "rich" man like a beggar, and they felt terrible for missing the chance to earn an even bigger tip by being nice.

The following week, Bahlool returned to the same bathhouse. This time, the atmosphere was completely different. The moment he stepped inside, the servants rushed to his side. They bowed low, took his coat, and led him to the best room. They prepared the finest warm water, scented with expensive oils. They spent hours giving him the most careful massage he had ever had, scrubbing him with soft sponges and making sure he was comfortable every second. They treated him like a king, whispering compliments and making sure he had everything he needed.

When Bahlool was finished and ready to leave, the servants all lined up near the exit, smiling broadly and rubbing their hands together. They were sure that if he gave ten dinars for a bad bath, he would surely give twenty or thirty for this royal treatment.

Bahlool reached into his pocket, pulled out a single, small copper dinar, and placed it on the table.

The servants were stunned. Their smiles disappeared instantly, replaced by confusion and anger. "Wait a minute!" one of them shouted. "What is this? Last week, we did absolutely nothing for you, and you gave us ten gold dinars. Today, we worked ourselves to the bone, gave you the best service in the city, and you only give us one tiny coin? Where is the logic in that?"

Bahlool smiled calmly and looked them in the eyes. "It's quite simple," he said. "The ten dinars I gave you last week was for the excellent service you gave me today. And this one dinar I’m giving you today? That is for the terrible service you gave me last week."

The workers stood in silence, unable to say a word. Bahlool had shown them that respect should never be bought and that a person’s value isn't found in their clothes. He taught them that if they only act kindly when they expect a reward, they aren't truly being kind at all—they are just being greedy.
