In a shocking case that drew widespread attention for its brutality and underlying motivations 23-year-old Viridiana Arevalo was murdered by her younger brother Eduardo Arevalo (also reported as Edwardo in some accounts) in The Colony Texas—a suburb approximately 30 miles north of Dallas—in December 2019. Viridiana, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was unmarried and had a boyfriend. Her pregnancy out of wedlock became a source of deep conflict within the family particularly for her brother who viewed her situation as a profound source of shame and embarrassment. The incident unfolded on December 16 2019. According to police reports and Eduardo's own confession an argument escalated inside their family home. Eduardothen 19 years old approached his sister from behind while she was seated on the couch in the living room. He strangled her to death with his hands. This act of violence ended not only Viridiana's life but also that of her unborn child.

In a calculated effort to cover up the crime, Eduardo did not immediately report what had happened. Instead, he composed and left a fake suicide note intended for the family to discover, hoping to mislead them and investigators into believing Viridiana had taken her own life. He then transported her body away from the home and dumped it in an alley behind homes on Strickland Avenue, outside the immediate family area, in an attempt to delay or prevent its discovery.

Viridiana was reported missing the following day, December 17, 2019. Family members raised concerns, prompting an investigation by The Colony Police Department. After several days of searching and inquiries, her body was found on December 22, 2019, at approximately 7:43 a.m., by neighbors who alerted authorities. The discovery quickly shifted the case from a missing person inquiry to a homicide investigation.

Detectives grew suspicious after speaking with family members and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide note. Surveillance footage from cameras near the crime scene and disposal location proved crucial. It captured Eduardo in the vicinity around the time the body was dumped, placing him at the scene before the discovery. Confronted with this evidence and other inconsistencies, Eduardo confessed to the murder.

In his statements to police, Eduardo admitted to the strangulation and explained his motive bluntly: he believed his sister was an "embarrassment" to the entire family. He expressed that it was better for her not to be part of the family anymore due to the perceived shame her pregnancy brought. He also acknowledged writing the fake suicide note and moving the body to avoid immediate detection. The confession came shortly after his arrest, and he was initially charged with capital murder—a charge elevated because the victim was pregnant—along with tampering with evidence. He was held in The Colony Jail on a bond exceeding $1 million.

The case highlighted themes of familial honor, cultural pressures around pregnancy outside marriage, and extreme violence sometimes described in media coverage as resembling an "honor killing," though it occurred within a U.S. context. Eduardo's actions reflected deep-seated anger over what he saw as a stain on the family's reputation.

Legal proceedings moved forward over the following years. Originally facing the possibility of life in prison without parole under the capital murder charge, Eduardo ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of felony murder. On June 9, 2023—or around that period in Denton County court—he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. The plea deal and sentencing reflected a resolution to the case without proceeding to a full trial, sparing the family further prolonged court proceedings while ensuring a substantial punishment for the crime.

This tragic event left a lasting impact on the community and Viridiana's loved ones, including her boyfriend and remaining family members who had to grapple with both the loss and the betrayal from within. It served as a somber reminder of how extreme notions of family honor can lead to irreversible violence, even in settings far removed from regions where such acts are more commonly associated. The case received coverage from major outlets including CNN, Fox News, Oxygen, People, and local Texas media, underscoring public shock at the premeditated nature of the killing and the young perpetrator's cold rationale. Viridiana Arevalo, described in reports as a young woman in the final stages of pregnancy, became a symbol of the devastating consequences when personal choices clash violently with rigid expectations.
