Netflix\'s \'Midnight Sun\': The New Era of Twilight Leaves Original Cast Behind

Stephenie Meyer\'s animated adaptation is moving forward, but Peter Facinelli and others are bummed about not returning.

The Twilight renaissance is officially upon us, but for the actors who originally brought Stephenie Meyer’s sparkling vampires to life, the return to Forks, Washington, is a bittersweet pill to swallow.

In late 2024, it was announced that Lionsgate Television and Netflix were partnering to develop an animated series based on Midnight Sun, Meyer’s 2020 companion novel that retells the events of the first Twilight book from the brooding perspective of Edward Cullen. Now, in 2026, the writers' room is assembled, and the series is hurtling toward production—but it will do so without the iconic voices of the original cinematic Cullen family.

A Rejected Reunion

For years, the original cast members of the blockbuster film franchise have spoken fondly of their time in the rainy Pacific Northwest. When news broke that Midnight Sun would be an animated venture, several key players saw the perfect opportunity to reprise their roles without the physical constraints of portraying immortal, unchanging teenagers.

According to Screen Rant, original cast members Peter Facinelli (Dr. Carlisle Cullen), Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen), Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen), and Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Hale) banded together to pitch themselves to the studio.

"We were like, 'Hey, it would be kind of cool, we're still pretty fresh out of it. Our voices haven't changed that much. Let's go ahead and let them know, as a group, collectively, we'd love to come back and do it the right way,'" Rathbone shared. He emphasized that the group wasn't demanding exorbitant salaries; they simply wanted to do it for the dedicated fanbase.

The response from the powers that be? A polite but firm "No."

"We couldn't even get an audition for it, which is funny," Rathbone laughed during a panel at the Motor City Comic Con.

Facinelli was visibly more disappointed by the rejection. Having played the compassionate patriarch of the Cullen clan across five films, the actor admitted his heartbreak. "Well, here's the truth, I'm bummed, because I love that character so much, so I hate the idea of having someone else play it," Facinelli confessed to fans.

Why Animation is the Right Choice

While the absence of the original cast is a blow to nostalgic "Twi-hards," the decision to transition the franchise into the animated medium is a brilliant strategic move by Netflix and Lionsgate.

The original Twilight films were mid-budget productions that relied heavily on the physical chemistry of its young, unknown cast. However, an adaptation of Midnight Sun inherently demands a larger scope. Because the story is told from the perspective of a 104-year-old telepathic vampire, the narrative frequently dives into Edward's century-long past, his mind-reading capabilities, and the high-speed, supernatural physics of vampire combat that Bella Swan was largely oblivious to.

Animation allows the creators to explore this expansive, magical realism without ballooning the budget to Marvel-level proportions. Furthermore, the medium inherently solves the franchise's biggest logistical hurdle: vampires don't age, but actors do. Animation ensures the Cullens remain forever frozen in their mythical, flawless seventeen-year-old bodies.

What to Expect from the Writers' Room

Leading the charge into this new era is showrunner Sinead Daly, whose impressive resume includes writing credits on The Get Down, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and Raised by Wolves. According to the Writers Guild of America, the talented room also features executive producers Liz Sczudlo (Dynasty), Garrett Lerner (The Good Doctor), and Rebecca Roanhorse (Echo).

Stephenie Meyer herself is heavily involved as an executive producer, ensuring that her distinctly dark and obsessive vision of Edward's inner monologue translates faithfully to the screen.

While the casting for the new Bella, Edward, and Jacob remains under tight wraps, the animated Midnight Sun series represents a massive swing for Netflix. The streaming giant is betting that the millennial nostalgia for the franchise, combined with a fresh visual style and a darker, more psychological tone, will enchant a whole new generation of viewers.

For the original cast, however, their time in the sun has officially set. As Facinelli noted, "To me, it was always a love story set in the vampire backdrop... I think that's why people love the Cullens." Fans can only hope the new voices capture that same immortal magic.
