First of the Rest

Snapshot from a nature walk. Not pictured: the three-year-old who saw me crouching to take this picture and decided it was the perfect opportunity to climb on Mama's back.

I’m very facially expressive, but I did my best to keep it in check as my classmates took turns reciting monologues from Shakespeare’s plays. I did not cringe at the half of them who barely got by, pronouncing most words correctly, shouting as if volume were the only aspect of performance they could grasp. I didn't weep for joy when I saw that my particular friends were also the only competent actors.
